Believe it or not, it's October and there are lots of things to do in the garden!
Now is the time to:
- Prune back unruly shrubs
- Enhance your soil
- Plant bulbs
We just moved into a new house and this is the first time that I've had my own land to garden (SUPER EXCITED!!!).
The photo to the right is a glimpse of the area that I have to garden. That photo was taken last spring and since then I have trimmed back the bushes and added a table.
But I've also discovered that we have been given some beautiful red-clay soil there too... which beautifully slopes towards the house, giving us occasional water leaks in the basement. Ick!
So, this fall, I decided that I needed to enhance the soil and correct the slope before getting serious about planting bulbs or fall perennials.
I went to Cofer's garden showplace (with complementary $20 gift card in hand) and picked up 2 bags of pine bark (superior to sphagnum for Georgia clay soils), 1 bag of manure, and 1 bag of pelleted lime.
So far, I have been able to work this mixture into a narrow strip along our sidewalk and divide some clumps of Lirope to fully boarder the walkway. I also planted some bulbs of Muscari, Allium Globemaster, and a Bearded Iris. I'm a little concerned these guys won't get enough sunlight on the NW side of our house, but I though I could give it a shot.
Photos coming soon...
